Mansfield Town Film Festival – Celebrating cinema and the art of storytelling

Posted onPosted on 14th Jun

Mansfield Town Film Festival is set to return for a second year in July, promising a cinematic experience like no other.

With a line-up featuring more than 100 films, breakout sessions, and even a specially-brewed film festival beer, this year’s event is shaping up to be an unforgettable event for film enthusiasts and the local community.

Running over three days at Mansfield Palace Theatre, from 26th to 28th July, it promises something for everyone, from seasoned film aficionados to curious newcomers.

Festival director Jay Martin said: “Last year’s success demonstrated the incredible talent and passion within the filmmaking community, and we are committed to building on that foundation.

“This year, we have an even more diverse and exciting programme, and we can’t wait to share these amazing films with our audience.

“We hope to see even more people come out to support the festival and experience the magic of cinema.”

Last year’s festival was a landmark event for Mansfield, highlighted by the presence of legendary filmmaker Ken Loach, who officially opened the event.

Loach’s involvement underscored Mansfield Town Film Festival’s commitment to showcasing working-class narratives and championing local talent.

His support gave the three days a level of prestige and recognition that has helped to elevate its status within the UK film circuit.

The 2023 festival also shone a spotlight on the diverse and rich talent emerging from working-class backgrounds, with numerous films focusing on stories that resonated with the local community.

Jay said this focus not only provided a platform for under-represented voices, but also brought stories of resilience, struggle, and triumph to the forefront.

“One of the standout events was the Mansfield Film Awards, an Oscars-style celebration that honoured the best films and performances featured in the festival,” he added. “This glamorous event brought a touch of Hollywood to Mansfield, complete with red-carpet moments and emotional acceptance speeches, highlighting the incredible achievements of filmmakers from various backgrounds.”

Building on last year’s success, the 2024 Mansfield Town Film Festival promises to be even more spectacular with several new additions.

These include a section for Neurodiverse and Disabled Voices, which aims to amplify the voices of neurodiverse and disabled filmmakers, and a Local Filmmaker Showcase to support and encourage the next generation of filmmakers from this area.

The festival will feature breakout sessions, designed to engage and educate attendees. They will include panel discussions, Q&A sessions with filmmakers, and workshops covering various aspects of filmmaking, from scriptwriting to post-production.

Jay said these events provide an invaluable opportunity for aspiring filmmakers and enthusiasts to gain insights from industry professionals, and network with peers.

“Come and be a part of this celebration of cinema, where stories come to life and communities come together. Let’s make Mansfield Town Film Festival 2024 an unforgettable experience!” he added.
