Free creative heritage workshop to celebrate history of local communities

Posted onPosted on 22nd Oct

Residents are invited to create a textile artwork using photographs of the area’s mining heritage as inspiration.

A free workshop, led by the Open Doors team from the National Civil War Centre in Newark, will be at Edwinstowe Library on Tuesday, 29th October, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. It is open to people of all ages and abilities.

Attendees will have the chance to explore the rich history of mining in Ollerton, Edwinstowe, and Bilsthorpe through the images. They can colour, stitch, and style their own images to take home, with all materials provided for the session.

Coun Rowan Cozens, portfolio holder for Heritage, Culture and the Arts at Newark and Sherwood District Council, explained the idea behind the workshop: “This is a wonderful opportunity for local residents to explore images from our archives, celebrate our local heritage and to do something creative.

“Local Edwinstowe, and surrounding area, residents can explore the local mining heritage. The pictures that have been chosen show the men who worked in the mines through to the equipment they used. We know the local communities are proud of their industrial heritage and, at the district council, we want to make sure that this heritage is celebrated and not forgotten.”
