Open water swim first for youngster

Mansfield Triathlon Club’s William Swindlehurst, 12, finished fifth in the U16 age group in his first competitive open water swim event at the Outlaw Nottingham Triathlon.

William completed the 1.2 mile race in just 41mins 38secs. Undaunted by competing against more experienced athletes, he was fifth in category in this challenging long-distance event.

In a family double. William completed the race with his dad, David, (same time) who returned to competitive racing after several years.

Meanwhile, the club sent a seasoned team to the Castle Howard standard distance triathlon. The event consisted of a 1500m swim, 40km bike leg followed by an over-distance 10.5km run.

First home for the club was Andrew Parker who finished in 3hrs and 11mins exactly. Stephen Fowkes completed the event in 3hrs 31mins and 1secs with Debs Kerry in 3hrs 38mins and 43 secs, the two having been neck-and-neck for much of the race.
