Getting shirty to help others

Mansfield Town has sent more than 100 old football shirts to school children in Malawi.

The shirts were delivered by a representative of the Southwell and Nottingham diocese of the Church Of England.

It is the second time in recent years that the club has made good use of old shirts after jerseys and training tops were posted to children in Sierra Leone in 2015.

Operations director Tina Broughton said: “We have close links with the local diocese of the Church Of England and were happy to help them in this way, and more importantly the children in Malawi.

“The country is one of the most impoverished in the world and the feedback we have already received from the children is heart-warming.

“They are treasuring these shirts, which they wouldn’t be able to otherwise afford.”

The Stags have strong links with the community, delivering presents to poorly children at King’s Mill Hospital, Sutton, at Christmas, and taking gifts to the John Eastwood Hospice at Easter. The club has also helped raise over £2,000 for a local homeless charity.
