The final structure on the former Mansfield General Hospital site came down this week as a six-month project to demolish the building and clear the 1.3 hectare site nears the end.
Contractors CMEC Demolition, of Nottingham, knocked down the last remaining structure – the chimney – at the site, which has remained unoccupied for the past 20 years.
Mansfield District Council bought the hospital in June 2013 and appointed CMEC to carry out the work of organising and managing the removal of asbestos, as well as demolishing the property. The work is currently on course for completion by 21st April
Mayor Tony Egginton said: “I am delighted that we are in the final stages of clearing the site and on course for completion in April.
“The hospital was unoccupied for 20 years and had become both a dangerous structure and an eyesore for residents. We have made a commitment as a Council to remove this building and remediate the site.
“We are hoping that the land will be ready and available for development at the end of the year.”
