Helping elderly beat loneliness

Jigsaw Support Scheme held a 1940s-themed party at The Staff of Life, Sutton, to celebrate National Older People’s Day and launch a new group befriending venue.

People danced to the sound of Glen Miller, had a sing-along to Vera Lynn and Gracie Fields, took part in a quiz and had a street party buffet.

Coun Jim Aspinall supported the event, representatives from Fidler & Pepper Solicitors helped out and Sutton Living Memory Group provided memorabilia from the 1940s.

The group, which helps to provide company and reduce isolation, meets every Tuesday at the Staff of Life at noon and is welcoming new members. A Jigsaw volunteer will introduce newcomers.

Jigsaw runs three group befriending sessions called Jigsaw Friends. They are at the Sir John Cockle, Mansfield, every Wednesday; The Fairways, Mansfield Woodhouse, every other Thursday; and The Staff Of Life every Tuesday.
The groups are for anyone aged 60 or over who feels lonely and isolated.
