Allotment project says thank you

Community allotment trustees held a thank you celebration for individuals, organisations and businesses that have supported it over the past 10 years.

Little Roots Children’s Community Allotment at the Little Roots Allotment, Mansfield Woodhouse, has been developed by allotment co-ordinator Richard Tucker.

Trustee John Else said: “We started the financial year April 2013 in an uncomfortable position because our main funder withdrew. Efforts were in place to secure an alternative but there was no guarantee of success. At one stage we were running desperately short of funds and without local donations the post of co-ordinator would have been unsustainable.

“We were delighted to secure support from the Tudor Trust in August 2013 for the next three years. Their belief in our project breathed new life into us.”

Little Roots offers children the chance to learn in an outdoor environment, supporting the science curriculum, and increases knowledge of where food comes from.

The allotment is part of the Long Yard’s Allotment site, Slant Lane. Primary schools and a children’s centre’s under-fives group visit during term time. There is an after-school gardening club and the allotment runs a summer gardening club in the school holidays.
