Youth radio station brings science festival to Ashfield

Posted onPosted on 24th Jan

An Ashfield-based community radio station is aiming to help make science fun with special broadcasts in February.

As part of the Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity, Takeover Radio 106.9 will host special Science Hour shows.

The annual festival showcases a world of science and curiosity that’s all around us every day by inviting people of Nottinghamshire to join in special events.

The first week of the festival, from 5th February, will see scientists and researchers leading activities in schools, while pupils are also given the chance to visit science sites.

The second week of the festival is during the school half-term holidays, when activities switch to community settings like libraries, museums, and shopping centres — for more information on events in Mansfield, Ashfield and Sherwood, go to https://nottsfosac.co.uk/events.

This year, for the first time, Takeover Radio 106.9, which is based at Sutton Community Academy, will be hosting a Science Hour show every weekday evening during the second week of the festival, from 12th to 16th February. Most of the shows will be created and presented by, and for, the young people of Ashfield.

The Science Hour shows will be broadcast at 6pm on 106.9FM and also online through the station’s Facebook page — www.facebook.com/takeover106.9.

Takeover Radio 106.9 is run by the Sutton Youth Radio charity, with the Science Hour shows being made possible through sponsorship from Thorpe Electrical Solutions, of Stanton Hill.

The radio station works with young people, aged 11-17, to give them free training in radio skills.

The team also helps young adults aged 18-25, providing free training in media, IT and communication skills.
