The Workhouse at Southwell has been awarded Museum Accreditation by Arts Council England. The scheme, which is the UK standard for museums and galleries, defines good practice for management, provision of services and care of collections.
House manager Sarah Spurrier said: “We’re proud to be a fully accredited museum as part of a scheme that is regarded as one of the most innovative and effective developments in the sector.
“The Workhouse is a constantly evolving so we hope visitors will be able to experience something different on every visit.
“This autumn we have a number of special events as well as our on-going exhibition ‘Paupers, Petticoats and Pinafores’.”
During September and October visitors are prompted to take a different view of the building from both inside and out, inspired by thoughts of those who lived and worked at The Workhouse. For those who prefer a living history experience Saturday 20 and 21 September will see the final ‘Pop-Up Pauper’ encounter of the season. The popular ‘Discover Greet House’ event returns on Saturday and Sunday 4 and 5 October when the old infirmary building will be open for viewing.
Further events are planned for later in the autumn, for full details call 01636 817260 or see www.nationaltrust.org.uk/theworkhouse
