A teenage singer-songwriter has won an national music competition for a song he composed about Mansfield.

Welcome To Mansfield by River Hopkins was the joint winner of the under-18s category at the 2020 UK Songwriting Contest.

The song by the Shirebrook Academy student told of his experiences of Mansfield as a teenager.

The 16-year-old said although the song spoke of the ‘grey town’ of Mansfield, it was not intended to offend an he was highlighting the need for more opportunities for young people.

The UK Songwriting Contest, an annual international music competition for songwriters, was formed in association with The BRIT Trust.
