Students’ showcase set for stage

Performing arts students are taking the law into their own hands in an upcoming production at West Nottinghamshire College’s Create Theatre.

The Showcase Performance by second-year Level 3 Performing Arts Diploma students is a contemporary and physical theatre show, and takes place on Thursday 7 December at 7pm at the venue, located at the Derby Road campus, Mansfield.

Billed as an “abstract and stylised” play about the law, it addresses how the masses blindly follow what the authorities say, without question. It promises to provoke the audience to wonder about the fairness of our own laws, and how we are ultimately treated by the systems that we seek to challenge.

Student Kian Staley, 17, from Edwinstowe, said: “The most challenging part of the role has been learning the lines and developing how to deliver these. I have also had to develop different physical theatre techniques; all of which will enable me to improve as a performer in the future.”

Simon Watt, programme area leader for performing arts, said: “The piece is very abstract and stylised, which has really pushed all of the students’ capabilities and allowed them to develop some fantastic physical ensemble work.

“It has also been wonderful to collaborate with students and tutors on the media make-up course, who will be applying specific make-up in keeping with the style of the piece. In addition, HND music students will be providing pre-show entertainment in the Create Hub on the night.”

The show is free; however, booking is essential on 01623 413363 or by visiting www.createtheatre.co.uk
