Southwell’s connection with the British Civil Wars – and the opening of the State Chamber in the Archbishop’s Summer Palace – has inspired new full day tours of the historic State Chamber, Minster and Gardens.
Following Charles 1’s capture at the Saracens Head, he spent his initial moments of final captivity at the Archbishop’s Palace.
The tours complement the existing Civil War Trails around the town and Newark’s new National Civil War Centre, which opend on May 3rd with battle re-enactments in the town on Sunday and Monday.
The full day tours are now available in addition to the existing half day tours and offer a half hour introductory video; Minster interior tour (1¼hours); Minster exterior tour (1hour); State Chamber and Gardens (¾hour).
On Bank Holiday Mondays inMay, guides will be present in the minster throughout the day and will be available for any length of tour of the interior of the Cathedral.
Chief steward Shaun Boney said: “Southwell Minster is a hidden gem in the heart of Nottinghamshire. It has an amazing and intriguing history… you should come and discover it for yourself. Stewards are present every day seeking to make your visit a thoroughly enjoyable experience, guide books and audio guides are also available.”
