Mansfield Palace Theatre’s Christmas pantomime has been cancelled and the venue is set to remain closed until 2021 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Coun Stuart Richardson, deputy mayor and portfolio holder for regeneration and growth, said: “Public safety is our priority and it is regrettable that the theatre will remain closed to prevent gatherings of large audiences and Mansfield’s much-loved pantomime will not be going ahead this Christmas.”

Although performances will not be taking place during the autumn and winter season, plans are being made for the venue to be used in new, innovative ways over the coming months.

Newly-appointed cultural services manager Sian Booth said: “Whilst this is really sad news for the theatre, we are being creative and looking at how we can open up the building in a Covid-safe way to support our local community.

“We are also looking ahead to the festive season and what the Palace Theatre can do to help bring Christmas to Mansfield, working with partners to help deliver exciting opportunities, events and experiences for the local people – watch this space.”

UK Productions producer Martin Dodd said: “After 20 years of providing Christmas cheer with the Palace Theatre pantomime to some of the best audiences in the country, it is with deep sadness that we are having to make this decision.

“We know what a central part the pantomime plays in the Christmas celebrations of so many families. We will be back next year and we very much look forward to seeing you all again.”

Customers who have purchased tickets for shows in 2020 and advance tickets for the pantomime will be contacted by the Palace Theatre Box Office team to transfer or refund tickets.
