Mansfield author launches children’s writing competition

Posted onPosted on 17th Sep

Growing up, some children dream of being a doctor, an explorer, a popstar or maybe even a detective — but not Trinderella!

Trinderella, or Lucy Trinder as she’s known to her family and friends, always dreamed of two things growing up, being a writer and having a house full of animals — and that’s exactly what she’s done.

Her first book, I’ve Got 7 Dogs, 2 Cats And A Gorilla In My Back Garden, is based on truth with a little bit of magic thrown in.

The book is a collection of poems based around the pets of Lucy and her sister, Katie Trinder.

Her second book, The Time My Grandma Accidentally Bought A Giraffe, is loosely based on her life growing up in Kirkby.

Her third book, Nobby Nudd, due out in December, continues the story of Trinder family life… but with a bit of magic thrown in, of course!

Having been lucky enough to have been given the encouragement to follow her dreams, Trinderella now wants to give children the same opportunity, so she has teamed up with the local business community to launch a writing competition.

Lucy, of Mansfield, said: “Writing has always been an outlet for me, I can lose myself in creating characters and stories.

“I think creativity is so important, and this year has been tough for everyone, particularly children.

“I wanted to work with the local business community to put together something fun, where children can let their imaginations run wild and be creative.”

There are seven local businesses backing the initiative — Asmech Systems, Concept 360, Vines Legal, Cianne Design, Gordian Coaching, Premier 247 Security and Personnel Solutions Midlands Limited.

Nicola De Lucis, Personnel Solutions director, explained why they wanted to get involved: “Personnel Solutions is a local recruitment agency heavily involved in local community and school projects.

“This story writing competition seemed like the perfect extension to that.

“Firing up young people’s imaginations is important to allow them to start to think about future careers and aspirations.”

The competition is open to children aged between seven and 11 and they can enter either on their own (with permission from their parent or guardian) or as part of their school.
