A variety of events and activities are taking place in country parks this coming May.

They include a number of conservation and re-enactment events at Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve which is also celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of being granted SSSI status for its rich wildlife and biodiversity.

Coun John Knight, committee chairman for culture at Nottinghamshire County Council, said: “Bestwood, Sherwood Forest and Rufford Abbey all have some exciting and varied events taking place in May and with many of the events free, there should be something of interest for everyone.”

May is a busy month at Sherwood Forest with the Crime and Punishment – Medieval May Fair on 4th and 5th May providing much fun and entertainment for visitors during the bank holiday weekend.

The Nottingham Ukeleke Orchestra will be providing musical entertainment on 11th May and as May is designated “Walk the Woods Month” there is a selection of walks on offer – from Redstarts and Nightjars to Tree ID and archaeology. There is a Dogs are Welcome walk, and a bike ride.

The month ends with half term events including archery demos, willow weaving, falconry walks and the Diamond Jubilee trail.

Rufford Abbey near Ollerton has some key events including a chance to once again sample the ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’ atmosphere when Rufford was owned by the Savile Family, with an event taking place on 21st May, with an appearance from Steel Pantastic on 18th May.
