Community cinema launches in Mansfield

Posted onPosted on 8th Sep

Final preparations are under way for new community cinema Kino Koło Notts’ screening of Polish classic comedy The Cruise at St John’s Centre, Mansfield, on 22 September.

The screening will be in Polish language with English subtitles.

Regarded as Polish cinema’s first ‘cult film’, Piwowski’s The Cruise is also considered by many to be a satirical masterpiece.

Shot in a quasi-documentary style, with a cast featuring mostly non- professional actors, the absurd plot parodies life in the (then) People’s Republic of Poland, reducing a weekend river cruise to a hilarious parody of the entire Communist system.

Liam Skillen, chair of Kino Koło Notts, said: “I’m really excited for our first screening in my home town of Mansfield. I think it’s important that the local cultural offer is representative of the wider town; it’s a view that’s shared by the whole team at Kino Koło.

“Film is a fantastic way to learn about other cultures, and we hope the whole town will join us in watching this much-loved classic of Polish comedy.”

Kino Koło Notts is a new community cinema bringing Central and Eastern European cinema to Nottinghamshire screens. Its aim is to provide affordable cinema screenings in foreign languages throughout the county, and support cultural exchange and appreciation.

Cinema For All, which is backing the initiative, said: “We are delighted to be working with Kino Koło Notts – their passion, determination and ideas have been buzzing around for the last few months and it is great to see it result in this first screening!

“By bringing Polish film to the big screen they are not only providing a platform for more diverse cinema, but also an opportunity for audiences to meet and connect with each
other.”
