Budding actors connect with new play

Performance students at West Nottinghamshire College are getting their lines perfected in the lead-up to starring in a UK-wide theatre project.

Students on the BTEC Extended Diploma in Performing Arts and the Musical Theatre programmes, will be performing at the college’s Create Theatre on 3rd March as part of National Theatre Connections – a nationwide celebration of new plays for young people.

Connections is produced by the National Theatre and supported by a number of individuals, trusts and foundations.

Each year new plays are commissioned from some of the best contemporary playwrights, for performance by schools and youth theatres all over the UK and Ireland, making Connections one of the world’s largest celebrations of youth theatre.

The groups will be performing a play called Remote by Stef Smith which charts the journey of a girl called Antler who steps out of her front door and throws her phone on the ground. She stamps on it then climbs the tallest tree in the park and doesn’t want to be found by anyone.

The performance sees seven teenagers’ lives all intertwine over the course of a single evening as they make their way through the park on a seemingly normal autumn night.

Tickets for this show, which starts at 7pm, cost £5each and can be purchased by contacting Create Theatre on 01623 413363.

The groups will then take their show to Derby Theatre on 2 May as part of the wider festival plan where they will meet with ten other companies who are also performing over that weekend. Tickets for this show are available directly through Derby Theatre.

Performing arts tutor Andy Dobb said: “This is a huge privilege for our artists to be able to perform as part of this national initiative.

“To be able to put their skills into practice in alternative performance spaces and to show their acting skills to new audiences will be a great opportunity to develop new confidence.”
