Volunteering high on students’ agenda

Posted onPosted on 19th Jan

Mansfield Education Hub students have been learning about volunteering and citizenship as part of their Foundation Learning study programme.

The group took part in a range of lessons linking to volunteering and citizenship, including an educational talk from Sherwood Forest Foodbank.

The talk allowed the students to learn about the way the foodbank works and what it does for the local community.

They were given a video tour around the foodbank, discussed the support that it offers to people in the area and gained an insight into the impact Covid-19 has had on its service.

In addition, the students looked at different volunteering organisations in the area and the needs these organisations are meeting.

Their study programme will also highlight the skills and benefits that can be gained from volunteering, with the goal of preparing the students to volunteer themselves within their local community.

Karen McCartney, Foundation Learning teacher at Mansfield Education Hub, said: “The work on volunteering will get our students ready to help groups looking for assistance in their local community.

“If anyone has volunteering opportunities, they are welcome to contact us for a further discussion as our students would be happy to help.”

Mansfield Education Hub is part of Barnsley College and the project-based Foundation Learning course offered at the hub sees students take part in ongoing practical projects throughout the academic year, which feed into their qualification. There are courses available throughout the year and young people are able to apply and enrol now.
