World gold for Ollie

Posted onPosted on 15th Jul

Swimmer Ollie Hynd won Britain’s first gold medal at the IPC World Championships in the SM8 200m individual medley, a day after fellow local athlete Charlotte Henshaw claimed silver.

Hyne (20), the Paralympic, world, European and Commonwealth champion, set a new European record of 2.22.40 in Glasgow.

He said: “I’m happy with the gold but I thought I had a bit more in me. It’s a special feeling being back in the pool, having won Commonwealth gold here last summer.”

Henshaw (28) broke her own European 100m breaststroke record to claim silver.

She twice improved her best time, 1.37.45 in the morning heats and 1.36.94 in the final.

Henshaw said: “It’s great to win a medal at home in front of friends and family.”
