Sherwood Wolf Hunt RLFC has gone from strength to strength and is already proving to be a force to be reckoned with as it starts its hunt for rugby league success, reports Kate Skillen.
In just a short period the club has developed dramatically after being formed earlier this year.
The Mansfield Woodhouse club, led by Adam Bates and Richard Tempest-Mitchell, has secured a good number of sponsorships, including from Bristol Street Motors, Just Concrete, and the Nisa store in Mansfield Woodhouse, mainly through its successful social media campaign.
The squad now sports a new Wolf Hunt kit designed and supplied by Scorpion Sports UK.
The club started by playing two friendly games, which were the start of a steep learning curve. The scoreline in a 72-6 defeat to Derby City did not reflect the battle Wolf Hunt put up.
A second friendly against Nottingham Outlaws RLFC was another defeat, but the team and coaching staff learned from the experience.
It brought a clear focus of fitness, power and patience, to ensure the squad worked on getting stronger for its first league match of the season.
Just five weeks after their first friendly, Wolf Hunt had a second meeting against Derby City, this time away from its Slant Lane base and with points in the Midlands Merit League at stake.
How the tables were turned! Sherwood Wolf Hunt powered to a 40-28 victory, showing just how hard the team had trained and evolved.
Wolf Hunt scored nine tries and conceded five to put Mansfield’s only rugby league club joint first in the Midlands Merit League.
Coach Carl Hardwick said: “We set ourselves high targets and a simple game plan of power and patience.
“The lads lived up to their wishes of giving Derby a game to remember. We now have to keep up that momentum and keep developing as a squad.”
On Saturday, 24th May, Wolf Hunt take on Coventry Bears at Slant Lane at 2pm in their first home league game.
