Stags triumph in local derby

Magnificent Mansfield Town upset the form book to win their local derby 2-0 at Notts County on Friday, thanks to goals in either half by Chris Clements and Ryan Tafazolli.

In front of more than 10,000 fans – 2,767 from Mansfield – Adam Murray’s side outplayed big-spending County to deservedly grab their first win of the season after an opening day draw against Carlisle and a Carling Cup defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

Clements fired home in the 36th minute from the returning Matt Green’s pass. Tafazolli then scored his second goal in four days to head in Malvind Benning’s cross at a free kick.

After the game manager Murray dedicated the win to the travelling Stags fans, who savoured Stags going top of the table – albeit before the remaining League Two matches on Saturday.

The Stags dominated a County side who were unbeaten in their first two matches of the season.

Nathan Thomas was denied an early goal when his shot was blocked by the keeper as County struggled to get out of their half.

A superb passing break into the area saw Green set up Clements for the opening goal.

In a more even second half keeper Brian Jensen, making his Stags debut, denied Stead and Benning made a vital interception before Tafazolli headed in Benning’s free to spark wild celebrations among the travelling fans.
