Stags safe but play-off hopes hit

AN injury time penalty denied the Stags a fifth consecutive victory to leave them seven points off the play-off places with three games remaining.

However, the point extended their great run to four wins and five draws from 10 games and finally mathematically ensured survival on their return to the Football League.

The Stags knew Stanley would fight until the end after they netted two stoppage time goals to earn an unlikely 3-2 win at the One Call Stadium earlier his season.

And that’s what happened as Martin Riley was penalised for a push deep into injury time and Kai Naismith levelled from the spot.

Substitute Jake Speight’s first goal of the season 15 minutes looked to have been enough for the Stags in front of 662 away fans.

Speight struck after great work by fellow substitute Sam Clucas. Speight also hit the post just before the equaliser when a clearance rebounded off him and onto the woodwork, and also had another ‘goal’ ruled out for offside.

Riley headed another good chance wide from close range.

However, the home side also had their chances and loan keeper Lewis Price made two good first-half stops.

The Stags are at home to Cheltenham on Easter Monday.
