Mansfield Town bowed out of the Carling Cup in the first round on Tuesday night at Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, losing 4-1.
The Owls quickly showed the gulf in class between the two sides, two divisions apart, as poor defending by the changed Stags’ line-up cost them dear.
Ryan Tafazolli pulled a goal back just before half-time, but further Owls goals at the start and end of the second half ended the contest.
Mansfield manager brought young defender Corbin Shires into the starting line-up and also gave first starts to summer signings Chris Beardsley and Craig Westcarr, as well as Jack Thomas.
