Stags face tough test

Posted onPosted on 14th Mar

Mansfield Town face another important match in their quest to avoid an immediate return to non-league football when they travel to relegation rivals Northampton Town on Saturday.

The Cobblers have been in the bottom two of League Two for some time, but have improved under new manager Chris Wilder and are unbeaten in five matches.

Two of the strikers Stags manager Paul Cox is believed to have targeted in the January transfer window will line up for the home side, Emile Sinclair and Cristian Lopez. Lopez joined on loan from Huddersfield on Friday.

Northampton are five points behind the Stags in a congested bottom half of the table and have a game in hand.

Mansfield, who lost to a controversial York penalty in midweek, beat Northampton, then managed by ex-Stag Adie Boothroyd, at the One Call Stadium in September. However, Northampton were unlucky to lose 3-0.

The match and the fall-out from the York defeat, when the Stags felt they were denied two clear penalties and unlucky to concede two spot-kicks – one of which was saved by keeper Alan Marriott – features in the Friday Night Football Forum on Mansfield 103.2.
