A Mansfield school, a council-led Ashfield initiative, clubs and individuals were among winners at the annual Nottinghamshire Sports Awards.

Nottinghamshire County Council and Sport Nottinghamshire staged the 23rd annual celebration of grassroots and professional sport at the Nottingham Conference Centre.

Kirkby’s Ollie Hynd was named Disabled Sportsperson of the Year for the second successive year, capping a memorable 12 months for the swimmer who shone at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Ollie won gold in the SM8 200m individual medley, a distance at which he Paralympic, World and European champion.

He is only the second athlete to win the award in successive years. His brother, Sam, won the award in 2009 and his Nova Centurion teammate, Mansfield’s Charlotte Henshaw, won the award in 2010.

Elsewhere in swimming, former Nova Centurion director Bill Furniss, who helped Mansfield’s Rebecca Adlington to double gold at the 2008 Olympics, received a special achievement award.

Mansfield’s Samworth Church Academy made history by becoming the first Mansfield-based school to win the Sporting School of the Year award.

Active Ashfield’s Stop Bullying in Sport campaign was named Sporting Project of the Year.

The initiative featured in the successful Active Ashfield Games and was backed by leading local athletes.

It also linked with the national Anti-Bullying Week and featured on social media.

Norwood Park Golf Centre, runners-up in the national 2014 Golf Mark award, received the Club of the Year accolade, the first golf club to win the award.

Paul Adcock was inducted into the Roll of Honour inductees. His son, Chris, of Ravenshead, who won the Junior

Sportsperson category in 2004, won badminton gold at last year’s Commonwealth Games and has taken part in the Olympics.

Coun John Knight, committee chairman for culture at the county council, said: “The annual Sports Awards are an evening of celebration across all levels of sport in Nottinghamshire.

“We have recognised and celebrated the achievements of so many award winners and nominees whose contribution to sport at all levels is truly outstanding.”

Simon Starr, director of Sport Nottinghamshire, said: “The Nottinghamshire Sports Awards is a key date in the county’s sporting calendar.

“It’s vital that we recognise and showcase the dedication and commitment of those in our communities who devote their lives to helping our athletes and teams enjoy and succeed in their sport.

“Celebrating the achievements of our talented sportspeople is equally important.”
