Sporting chance thanks to grants

Mansfield and Ashfield sports clubs and future sporting stars are among the recipients of Nottinghamshire County
Council grants worth almost £40,000 to support grassroots sport in the county.

The Grant Aid Sub-Committee considered 31 applications from clubs for grants to the Community Sports Fund and 93 applications to its Rising Stars programme from individuals.

Chairman Coun Joyce Bosnjak said: “Our sports grant schemes play a vital role, both in creating opportunities for people to take part in sport at a grassroots level and through funding our most talented young athletes whose success inspires others from throughout the county.”

The fund provides grants of up to £1,500 to support projects aimed at increasing or maintaining participation.

The 31 applications covered 14 different sports, with 24 bids from new applicants. In total, 15 clubs received part or all of the amount they requested, sharing £16,000.

The Rising Stars scheme supports talented young athletes (aged 19 and under) who are competing at a regional and national level. Funding is provided for expenses like travel, training and accommodation whilst competing or training.

There were 93 application. A total of £23,000 will be shared between 85 young sportspeople.

Recipients of Community Sports Fund grants include:

Woodhouse Colts Football Club – £980, Sutton Swimming Club – £1,500, Sutton Harriers Athletic Club – £1,441, Mansfield Triathlon Club – £1,000 and Kirkby Portland Cricket Club – £1,000.

Recipients of Rising Stars grants include:

Mansfield — Danny Brewer, taekwondo; Emily Witts, badminton; Ethan Davis, skiing; Joshua Tarry, figure skating; Paige Vick, gymnastics.

Ashfield — Alexandra Roe, hockey; Anna Barnes, basketball; Caelidh Ross, athletics; Caprice Miloro, athletics; Ellie Downie, gymnastics; Ellie Muzeja, taekwondo; Freya Christie, tennis; Holly Lounds, wheelchair basketball; Imogen Gould, swimming; Katrina Bramley, gymnastics; Lewis King, ice hockey; Lewis Locker, cycling; Libby Coleman, triathlon; Luke Mitchell, basketball; Nico Leivars, boxing; Paige Kingston, badminton; Rhys Taylor, swimming; Rimini Miloro, athletics; Samuel Hay, squash; Thomas Howarth, swimming; William Bradley, athletics .
