Parkrun for juniors launched in Sutton

Posted onPosted on 6th Feb

Sutton Lawn has welcomed a new junior Parkrun for four to 14-year-olds.

The free four-lap 2k event for juniors, hosted every Sunday at 9am, allows youngsters to walk, jog or run the course alongside their parents/carers.

The event has been made possible by financial contributions from Ashfield District Council, Active Notts, Mansfield Building Society and Coun Samantha Deakin’s Nottinghamshire County Council Divisional Fund.

Ashfield District Council chairman Coun Anthony Brewer, who started the launch event, said: “It’s fabulous to see so many youngsters already taking part in the event. We all know how good running is for you and the children looked like they were having a great time.”

Event directors Paul Davies and Jode Binch, with the support of local Parkrun ambassador Mark Hazlehurst, have been instrumental in the launch of the new junior Parkrun.

Paul said: “Sutton Lawn junior Parkrun will support the physical and emotional wellbeing of our local community. It was amazing to see so many families and local volunteers enjoying the opening event, there were smiles all around.”

Jode added: “Getting children up, out and active is such a hard task in times of technology so being able to provide a fun, free, family event in the area is amazing.”

Coun Deakin, ward councillor for Sutton Central and New Cross, said: “As the local councillor for the area it’s great to see events happening for young people. My hat goes off to the tremendous efforts of all the volunteers involved so I’m pleased that the council has been able to support this event.”

A junior Parkrun is also available at Brierley Forest Park every Saturday, at 9am.

Parkruns are free, weekly timed events around the world. They are open to everyone and are delivered entirely by a team of volunteers.
