Mansfield Town 1-2 Southend United

Posted onPosted on 1st Nov

Seven games without a win, three goals in six matches (and just 13 goals from 16 games this season) and still a lengthy injury list stretching to eight players.

That is the situation facing beleaguered Mansfield boss Paul Cox, who defiantly promised a shake-up after a toothless performance.

Mansfield’s inept defending and lack of creativity and urgency allowed a good Southend side to lead 2-0 in the 70th minute.

Keeper Sascha Studer made two superb saves to deny Corr and Stags’ hard-working full back Liam Marsden blocked a goalbound shot from the striker.

But Studer had no chance when Leonard rifled in a terrific drive off the underside of the bar from a well-worked corner, when the home defence switched off.

The back four was missing again as Worrall hammered in a deserved second 20 minutes from time.

Mansfield failed to force a save from the visitors’ keeper until the 73rd minute when Rakish Bingham was denied.

Substitute Ollie Palmer was gifted a close range goal by a terrible miskick to spark a late revival for the home side as Mansfield switched to 3-5-2, but it rarely threatened an equaliser. Substitute Fergus Bell went close with a curling drive.
