Legends and fans join for charity event

Brave Mansfield Town fan Nathan Edge — and his family — are behind the East Midlands’ Soccer Six tournament at One Call Stadium this month, featuring fans and legends of six clubs.

Supporters of the Stags, Nottingham Forest, Derby County, Chesterfield, Leicester City and Notts County will each play with a legend from their respective clubs at the home of Mansfield Town FC.

Money raised will go to Guide Dogs. The charity helped Stags’ fan Nathan when he completely lost his sight in 2014 and has since given him a new lease of life.

Nathan is now thanking Guide Dogs by fundraising for the cause and raising awareness of the charity.

Nathan said: “Unfortunately, every hour, every day, someone loses their sight, just like me.

“I want to make sure they are able to receive the same support that I was lucky enough to get.

“When Hudson (Nathan’s guide dog) came into my life, I was in a very difficult place. My sight was slowly going, I lost my independence and I lost my freedom. I stopped doing the things I loved and I even stopped going to football.

“He was my rock throughout all of that. From there on, we’ve gone from strength-to-strength and it’s been an incredible journey.

“The club have been so supportive. I couldn’t ask for anything more. It shows how they are there to support the fans of the club.”

His father, Mick Edge, believes the event will bring different sets of supporters together and support the work of Guide Dogs.

“It’s against rivals so you can have that bit of banter, but it’s also about bringing people together,” he said.

“It’s remembering that there’s more to life outside of football. Every penny raised will go to Guide Dogs because it receives no Government funding for its services.”

The One Call Stadium pitch will be split into two halves for the tournament, with under-35s on one side and over-35s on the other.

The tournament is on Sunday, 8th May from 10.30am. Admission is £3, under-12s £1. There will be other activities taking place throughout the day.

Tickets can be purchased from the Mansfield Town ticket office, or via telephone on 01623 482482.

Fans wanting to take part must raise a minimum of £50 sponsorship. Anyone interested in playing should email [email protected] stating their team and age.
