Mansfield Town 3-1 Notts County

Posted onPosted on 12th Jul

MANSFIELD Town came from behind in their first pre-season friendly to defeat neighbours Notts County 3-1.

Two of their summer signings who have played at the Glen Hoddle academy in Spain, striker Alex Fisher in the first half and attacking midfielder Fergus Bell in the second half, impressed.

Brad McGowan gave County an eighth minute lead, left unmarked from a right wing corner to shoot home from eight yards, despite the efforts of Jamie Maguire on the goalline to keep the ball out.

Summer signing Alex Fisher, whose last club was in Italy after moving on from the Glen. Hoddle academy in Spain, should have levelled in the 18th minute.

Matt Rhead’s flick-on from a deep cross left him clear, but with just the keeper to beat Fisher lobbed over.

However, a minute the striker gained his revenge. Again Rhead’s physical presence created problems on the edge of the County area and Fisher ran clear, wide of the keepe, Fabian Spiess, whose outstretched hand tripped the striker up.

Fisher got to his feet to calmly tuck the penalty into the bottom right corner, sending the keeper the wrong way.

In the 23rd minute the Stags completed the turnaround. Adam Murray’s deep corner was headed back across the six-yard area by Rhead and Martin Riley headed in from close range.

On the half-hour Fisher might have grabbed a second goal, but he blazed over with a shot on the turn as Murray waited to pounce.

The striker yet again got on the end of a move that saw him free on the edge of the area with just the keeper to beat. This time Spiess kept out his attempted lob with an outstretched hand.

The outstanding Rhead won yet another header 20 yards out to set up another chance, this time for Sam Clucas whose half-volley flew narrowly wide.

Triallist keeper Dimitar Evtimov, on loan from Nottingham Forest, had a nervy first half, missing a cross and later miskicking a simple pass-back.

Wholesale half-time changes, including the introduction of several triallists, led to a more fragmented second-half.

One of the Stags new signings, Fergus Bell, a half-time substitute, forced a fingertip save from Spiess midway through the second-half in a livewire 45-minute creative cameo.

Five minutes from time hesitation allowed County a late shot inside the area, but he recovered to deflect the effort and the keeper gathered the ball.

The Stags put the result beyond dobnt two minutes from time when Ollie Palmer headed in one of several long throws from Liam Marsden.
