Gala win as club makes successful start to new year

Posted onPosted on 15th Jan

Sutton Swimming Club started 2020 as it finished 2019 — with success.

Hosting its first competitive gala of the new year at Lammas Leisure Centre, Sutton — the annual Free Press relay gala, which comprises 35 different relay events involving swimmers from nine years to the Open age groups — Sutton A team retained the trophy.

The Sutton hosts again fielded two teams as head coach Lee Bunker used it as a fun event to get some short, sharp, sprint speed back into his swimmers after the break.

It was part of the preparations for the Nottinghamshire County Championships.
Sutton A gained a total of 195 points, beating Leander into second place with 175 points. Third were Falcon with 113 points, ahead of Kimberley on 106 points.

Sutton B were fifth place with 103 points.

Whilst delighted with the win on the night for the A team, the Sutton coaching team were also impressed with the B team performance, who ran some other clubs’ first teams very close and managed to score highly in some of the relay events, even beating their own A club teammates on one occasion.
