Mansfield father/son golfing duo Steven and Gavin Keyworth are 54 holes away from a date with Darren Clarke after qualifying for the finals of the 2014 Your Golf Travel Turkish Open Knockout.

The Norwood Park Golf Club members – playing under the team moniker “Mag’n’lad” – carded an impressive 43 stableford points to finish inside the top four at the Northern Region Final held at Stapleford Park in October.

The result will see the Keyworth’s fly to Antalya, Turkey on November 7, where the competition’s final eight pairings will continue their battle on the Faldo Course at Cornelia Diamond Resort, for the chance to play with Clarke in the Turkish Airlines Open Pro-Am at The Montgomerie Maxx Royal on November 12.

Gavin, 22 (5 handicap) and his father Steven (18 handicap) survived three rounds of match-play fourballs against other pairings from the northern region to qualify for last month’s final.

“The regional finals had to be our most memorable round,” Gavin said. “We made three birdies on the trot on 11, 12 and 13 – I personally finished 2-under on the back 9 on my own – and that really helped us get the score we needed to qualify for Turkey.”

That’s just the sort of spirit that Clarke, the 2011 Open champion, says he’s looking forward to seeing from the competition winners.

“I’m really looking forward to playing with a couple of these guys at The Turkish Airlines Open,” Clarke said. “I know they’ve played a lot of matches to get here, so I’m expecting some great play in their quest for the title.”

Asked what they were most looking forward to about the prospect of playing golf alongside Clarke in Turkey, Keyworth said: “We can’t wait to meet such a huge legend in the game. He’s a big inspiration!”

The 22-year-old added: “We’ll both be playing every chance we get, and will definitely be getting alot of sun cream!”

The 16 competition finalists will all be flown to Antalya and stay on a seven night, all-inclusive package at the 5* Cornelia Diamond Resort courtesy of Your Golf Travel, the world’s largest golf travel provider.

In the meantime, teams will be fine-tuning their swings and short-games in the hope of joining Clarke and a cast of European Tour stars – including Ryder Cup heroes Sergio Garcia, Henrik Stenson, Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Victor Dubuisson – at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal.
