Duo secure first county qualification times

A total of 50 Sutton Swimming Club (SSC) members took part in the two-day Major Oak swim, hosted by Mansfield Swimming Club at Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Centre.

SSC finished second overall, with swimmers gaining podium places, personal bests and county times — Emma Baker and Maddison Brown securing their first county qualification times.

Head coach Simon Hill said: “I was proud of everything that the swimmers achieved throughout the weekend. I was joined by a small army of volunteers who supported in either a coaching, team managing, officiating, or stewarding capacity and I express my gratitude to everyone who supported.”

The meet includes an event known as Skins, a series of back-to-back races on a knockout basis with swimmers not knowing which stroke will be chosen for the next race. The top six fastest swimmers from the individual medley races by age category swim against each other until just two remain.

Evan Hawley finished third in the boys’ over-14s. In the girls under-14s, Daisy Stirland was sixth, and Elsa Barber fourth. In the girls’ over-14s Amelia Roberts was third.

From 110 girls competing, SSC saw five girls make the top 20 — Ellie McKeaney (3rd), Elsa Barber (9th), Amelia Roberts (11th), Nicola Ablomiejko (14th) and Chloe Morton (17th).

From 107 boys, SSC also had five in the top 20 — Jack Hill (3rd), Jared Collins (4th), Evan Hawley (5th), Liam Hill (14th) and Egors Golubs (19th).
