Skating champion to launch Mansfield ice rink

Nottinghamshire ice skating star Corey Spencer will be helping to launch the Mansfield One Call ice rink with a Christmas-themed show.

The opening event, at 6pm on Friday, 30th November, will see the British male freestyle champion, from Mansfield, feature in a show he has choreographed called Frostbite, along with a hand-picked team of local dancers.

They will perform the free 30-minute show on the ice to a live narration and songs performed by a former member of Mansfield’s acclaimed Cantamus girls’ choir.

Executive Mayor of Mansfield Kate Allsop said: “It’s going to be a magical show and spectacular launch for the ice rink, the first we’ve ever had in Mansfield.

“We hope families will visit the town centre and experience all that Mansfield has to offer in the run up to Christmas.

“Support our businesses by shopping local but take a break to enjoy the ice rink as well as the Christmas market on West Gate, Santa’s Grotto in the Four Seasons, plus there’s the panto at the Palace Theatre. There’s something for everyone this Christmas.”

Corey added: “It is a real honour to help launch the Mansfield One Call Ice Rink and I am looking forward to showcasing our local skating talent and encouraging people to take to the ice.

“Skating is something that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities and this rink will be a really fun way to get more fresh air and exercise during the Christmas season.”

The ice rink will be in the heart of the town centre outside the Old Town Hall and, apart from Christmas Day, will be open from 30 November until New Year’s Eve.

Various special events will be held at the rink, including the 2018 UK Winter Classic ice hockey tournament, figure skating ice shows, and learn to skate coaching sessions for all ages and abilities on Sunday mornings.

The Frostbite show will take place again at 1pm on 23rd December and in a rink closing ceremony on 31 December after public skating ends at 4pm.

The 2018 Winter Classic hockey tournament will be on Friday, 7th December and features teams from across the country playing 15 minute games. Games will take place from early morning until the final at 2.20pm, which will be followed by a presentation. The rink will be open from 3pm for public skating on this day.
