Rotary club leads the way!

Two Kirkby girls have taken part in a Rotary activity course for young potential leaders.

Molly Blore and Claire Smith, both 16, students at Ashfield School, were sponsored by Kirkby Rotary Club to attend a weekend course in Derbyshire as part of the Rotary Young Leadership Awards (RYLA).

Participants experience team building and use of initiative through discussions and activities.

Molly and Claire undertook a night walk, mountain biking, canoeing and abseiling, as well as weaselling, a type of open caving.

Molly said she overcame a fear of heights to abseil. “I enjoyed it so much that I did it again”, she said. “It was my favourite activity of the weekend”.

Claire said she had an initial problem with weaselling. “I managed to keep calm and felt so pleased that I had gone completely out of my comfort zone,” she said.
