Repair work at sports centre

Mansfield District Council has begun urgent repair work to Meden Sports Centre in Warsop, after it was closed last week due to safety concerns.

The work will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will start immediately and will enable the sports hall and multi-use-games-area room to re-open by the 15 September for both school and community use. From this date, customers will be able to book outdoor facilities by contacting the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.

Phase two will require the sports centre and swimming pool to be closed over the Autumn/Winter period so that essential health and safety works can be completed. Details of the programme of works will be published shortly on the Mansfield District Council website www.mansfield.gov.uk as will regular updates.

Councillor Philip Shields, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Mansfield District Council, said: “We appreciate how important this facility is to the community of Warsop and will be doing all we can to complete the works so that the facility can be re-opened.

“We are sorry for any inconvenience this short closure will cause, but the safety of our customers is paramount. I have been working closely with Mansfield District Leisure Trust and Nottinghamshire County Council to provide some facilities locally and also to provide opportunities for Meden members to enjoy our other facilities within the District.”

Brian Taylor, Chairman of the Mansfield District Leisure Trust, added: “We are working hard with Meden School to find temporary space within the school to accommodate our gym equipment and provide access for the local community.

“We will be freezing all Meden membership payments until the Centre re-opens. In the meantime, customers will be able to use Water Meadows Swimming and Fitness Complex, Oak Tree Leisure Centre, River Maun Recreation Centre and Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre free of charge.

“We will be offering all pupils who have swimming lessons at Meden alternative lessons at Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre. We will be contacting all customers that the closure affects directly and further updates will be available on our website and via social media.”
