Mansfield Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society are back in March with their production of a hit musical based on a true story.
The society is staging the dazzling production of Broadway hit Kinky Boots at Mansfield Palace Theatre, from 6th to 10th March.
It is based on the Miramax film, written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth.
The musical follows the real-life journey of Steve Pateman (Charlie Price in the musical), who reluctantly inherits his father’s struggling Northampton shoe factory, W.J. Brooks, in the early 1990s. Demand for traditional, high-quality, men’s leather men’s brogues had slumped, leading to his fears for the future.
But, desperate to save the family business from bankruptcy, Charlie discovers an unlikely ally in the form of Lola, an entertainer and drag queen with a penchant for sturdy stilettos who wants high-heeled boots in male sizes.
Together they embark on a mission to transform the factory and redefine what it means to be true to oneself.
At the heart of the production lies Steve’s remarkable story and his determination and resilience in the face of adversity, which mirror the spirit of the musical.
His story became the basis for the film and subsequently the stage adaptation of Kinky Boots.
Steve visited the society’s rehearsals in February and Wayne Shutt, who will play Don in the show, said his presence infused the cast and production crew with renewed passion and purpose.
He shared anecdotes, insights, and memories from his factory days, inspiring everyone involved in bringing Kinky Boots to life.
“Seeing my life unfold on stage is both surreal and deeply moving,” he said. “The power of acceptance, resilience, and the magic of a well-crafted pair of boots — it’s all there in the musical. I’m honoured to witness this interpretation of my journey.”
On his visit Steve also donned a pair of bright red kinky boots.
Among the cast will be:
Jamie Savage (Charlie Price), JJ McCormack (Lola), Helen Mumby (Nicola), Rebecca Wigman (Lauren), Wayne Shutt (Don), Carolyn Frith (Pat), Matthew Bird (George), Lauren Taylor (Trish), Garry Richardson (Harry), Graham Berridge (Mr Price), Steve Webb (Simon Sr), Jono Cooper (Richard Bailey), Clare Harris (Marge), Kay Thomason-Vardy (Milan stage manager), Harry Bramall (young Charlie), Max Shaw) young Charlie), Sam Harrington (young Lola/Simon), Ollie Weaver (young Lola/Simon).
Mansfield Operatic Society, which was founded in 1905 and staged 9 To 5 The Musical in February last year, said it is renowned for a commitment to delivering top-tier theatrical experiences.
