Offering support to others at Mansfield Education Hub

Posted onPosted on 26th Jan

Mansfield Education Hub students have been working hard to support local people affected by the rise in the cost of living.

The learners have been focusing on reducing the impact on vulnerable groups in Mansfield, while learning about the support that is available to them as part of a positive citizenship project.

Initially the students met Jordan Hannah, director of Butterfly, a charity that assists those experiencing domestic abuse by providing a safe space, access to counselling and support services, clothing, furniture, toys, food, and toiletries.

They then visited Mansfield Soup Kitchen, which is run by a team of volunteers for the local homeless community every Wednesday evening.

Prompted by their findings, the students launched an appeal for donations towards both Butterfly and Mansfield Soup Kitchen. Members of the public were able to drop off donations at the hub at a special charity day, which also saw the students run their own coffee shop — serving homemade cakes, mince pies and hot chocolate to those donating items.

Teacher Karen McCartney said: “The charity day was very successful and we received many donations, which have been taken to the organisations. The students would like to thank all those who supported these charities.

“Our students demonstrated positive citizenship skills after finding out more about local charities and wanting to help.

“It has been great to see them getting involved to raise donations for their chosen charities and contribute to supporting the fantastic work they do.”
