National award for dance group

A dance group that honed its skills at weekly dance production classes at myplace Westfield Folkhouse Young People’s Centre in Mansfield has been recognised at a national awards event at the House of Commons.

Pride, featuring 29 young people with disabilities from Mansfield and surrounding areas, was formed earlier this year with support from Nottinghamshire County Council’s County Youth Arts team and with funding from The Mighty Creatives (TMC).

It received a highly commended award in the Best Community Group category at the annual Kids Count Inspiration Awards.

Pride performed at Showcase 2014 at the Palace Theatre in February and gave a Bollywood-inspired performance at Tolfest in Mansfield this summer.

Member Kelly Gibson, 23, of Mansfield Woodhouse, said: “Pride has given me a lot of confidence. I took on an assistant leader role within rehearsals and as a result am looking to study a dance leadership course soon.”
