Luminarium inflatable sculpture to land in Mansfield

Posted onPosted on 26th Feb

Mansfield is to welcome a world-renowned art installation at Easter, offering a multi-sensory experience.

The giant Architects of Air inflatable luminarium sculpture will land in Chesterfield Road Park for the school Easter holidays, from Thursday 4th to Saturday, 13th April.

Alan Parkinson, of Architects of Air, said: “The luminarium, in various formats, has been presented all over the world for the past 32 years and been visited by more than three million people.

“It is a paradox that such a stimulating environment can simultaneously be so calming, comforting and exciting.

“Through labyrinthine tunnels and cavernous domes, visitors move in a medium of saturated and subtle hues. Vivid reflections of liquid colour spill across the curved walls, creating a world apart from the normal and every day.

“The radiance of the daylight transmitted by the coloured parts of the luminarium is surprising in its luminosity and makes a direct impact on the senses.”

The luminarium visit is part of the Destination Mansfield project to promote the town as a place to visit and explore, bringing in visitors from outside the district to help the wider local economy.

Coun Stuart Richardson, portfolio holder for Regeneration and Growth, said: “We are delighted to be able to bring world-class cultural experiences of this kind to Mansfield to help raise the profile of the district, both regionally and nationally, and develop the visitor economy.”

The Mansfield District Council event has been made possible through government and Arts Council England funding as part of the council’s National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) status and the Destination Mansfield programme.

Entry will be £3 per person, children under two and carers free. The fully-accessible luminarium, which is suitable for all ages, will be open from 10am, with the last entry at 4pm.

Pre-booking is advised at www.mansfield.gov.uk/palacetheatre/events/event/103/timisien-luminarium-by-architects-of-air although visitors can pay on arrival if numbers allow.

The cultural aspect of the project overlaps with the council’s NPO status and the Art Council’s Let’s Create programme, a 10-year strategy to bring ambitious cultural activities to a wider part of the country, with a strong emphasis on the health and wellbeing benefits of creative opportunities.

Additional Destination Mansfield and NPO funded events are planned later in the year, including Party On The Market on Sunday, 2nd June; Mansfield Carnival on Saturday, 22nd June; Mansfield Film Festival in July; and Walk The Plank Breathe, a major art installation about the human body in October.
