Help to inspire love of reading

Posted onPosted on 22nd May

People are being urged to become literacy volunteers in primary schools across Mansfield and Ashfield to help inspire a love of reading in children.

Literacy Volunteers, formed in 1996, needs more volunteers to work with pupils on a one-to-one basis in schools.

The charity encourages children to develop an interest and love for books.

Volunteers do not teach reading, but talk, read, and play word games with children to help build their vocabulary and confidence through words and spelling.

Formal qualifications are not needed, and training and ongoing support is provided.

A spokesman said: “If you can give just half a day a week’s regular commitment for at least one school year, and would like to become part of a committed volunteering force that is doing great work improving literacy and transforming the lives of children, please get in touch.”
