Coronavirus stops hot cross buns tradition

Posted onPosted on 1st Apr

Since 1894, it has been a tradition at the Old Meeting House Unitarian Chapel, Mansfield, to give out hot cross buns to youngsters in the town.

Established under the will of Mary Mallatratt, a local licensee of the Blue Boar Inn on Stockwell Gate, 1,400 buns were distributed in 1905.

To get a tasty bun was a real treat, especially during difficult times in the 1920s and 1930s, when the local policeman kept a long queue in order along Rooth Street.

Many people still remember running across the yard to receive their bun. If you have a memory or photo it can be shared at the chapel’s website — www.ukunitarians.org.uk/mansfield

Unfortunately the event will not take place this year because of the coronavirus guidelines, but two short films can be seen on the chapel’s Facebook page and further photos can be found on sites like Our Mansfield.

The photograph shows Janet Ryder, nee Parr, giving out buns in the chapel grounds in the mid-1950s.
