Focusing on benefits of local spend for business

Posted onPosted on 28th Jul

Business support group Mansfield and Ashfield 2020 said it was encouraging to see so many local businesses attend its July business breakfast meeting.

The group brings together people who are trying to make Mansfield and Ashfield a better area; gives business people the chance to have a voice into local politics and the improvement of our community; and provides regular networking opportunities.

The latest business breakfast meeting at the Eastwood Suite at Portland College was sponsored by Saville House School, an independent day school based in Mansfield Woodhouse.

The school caters for children from pre-school age through to 11 years-old.

Headteacher Claire King shared her vision for education that exists beyond the classroom and the benefits this brings to children in terms of resilience, curiosity, and independent learning — skills that will definitely be needed for the future workforce.

The Mayor of Mansfield, Andy Abrahams, and Tom Woodhead, business services director at Woodhead Group, then spoke about the PassivHaus homes built on Saundby Avenue, Mansfield.

Woodhead Construction worked closely with Mansfield District Council to deliver the project, which is a good example of Mansfield District Council’s commitment to the Green agenda, to local procurement, and to its aim to keep money spent in the local area.

Woodhead Group was able to demonstrate that 87% of the spend was within 20 miles of the construction site.
It also delivered careers talks to 700 local children and employed three work experience students and two trainees on the build, using the opportunity to inspire the next generation.

Ella McManus, 2020 director of operations, said: “There are opportunities for local businesses to get involved with council projects and both Mansfield and Ashfield district councils have opened portals on their websites that encourage local businesses to submit their details as a provider — and

“This was the last breakfast meeting before we break for the summer.

“Our next business breakfast event will be held on Friday, 30th September, when our guest speakers will be Ben Bradley MP and Mansfield Building Society… book early to avoid disappointment.

“Did you know we deliver more than just breakfast meetings? We now have a few events that you can attend across the district at different times of the day.

2020 has been backing business in the region since 1991 and now supports investment in Mansfield and Ashfield.
It helps 170-plus members to grow their business and forges strong networks to benefit local communities.

The monthly breakfast meeting is one of its networking events and the next one will be held on 30th September at the Eastwood Suite at Portland College, from 7.15am.
