Building award for Queen’s Place

Mansfield’s prestigious new town centre gateway building, Queen’s Place, has won a major Local Authority Building Control (LABC) award for the East Midlands.

The building, which was constructed by Balfour Beatty and Mansfield District Council, won the Best Small Commercial Building category and now goes through to the national finals in London at the end of the year.

It was a successful night for the council’s Building Control team, which was awarded highly commended in two other categories: Best Individual New Home, and Best Customer Partnership with a Local Authority Building Control team.

The Mansfield Transport Interchange, which was built by Kier Construction in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council and Mansfield District Council, won Best Public Service Building.

Queen’s Place has an excellent rating from the green architecture scheme BREAAM, which sets the standard for best practice in sustainable building design, construction and operation. To date, tenants have been found for three of the six offices and one of the two retail units.

Coun Kate Allsop, portfolio holder for economic regeneration, said: “We are extremely proud of this award for Queen’s Place, which is a landmark building in the centre of Mansfield. It is yet another fantastic achievement for Mansfield Building Control and highlights the dedication, expertise and professionalism of our building control officers, conservation officer, regeneration officers, planning officers and our design service team.”

The LABC awards are judged on the ‘excellence’ shown from a construction and technical building control point of view. The awards showcase building and design teams that have had to address technical issues or difficult sites and have come up with innovative and creative solutions.

If you are planning to erect a new building, extend an existing building, or make internal or external alterations such as replacing windows or removing walls, get in touch with the council’s award winning and not-for-profit Building Control team, who will be able to advise you on each stage.
