Football fan turns 3p into £2,686.04!

Sutton pensioner Janus ‘George’ Wagonback hit the national headlines after becoming a record-breaker at bookmaker Betfred.

He wagered just 3p on a 10-fold football accumulator — and won £2,686.04.

Betfred said no one at the business could remember anyone winning so much from such a small stake.

He bet there would be draws in the 10 games — Millwall-Preston, Wimbledon-Cheltenham, Bradford-Leyton Orient, Colchester-Rochdale, Swindon-Crawley, Dundee-Dundee United, Hibernian-Hearts, Ross County-Aberdeen, St Mirren-Motherwell, and a World Cup Qualifier between Lebanon and Iraq.

George, who was allowed place his unusually low bet — all the loose change hea had in his pockets — because he is a regular punter at the Betfred shop on Low Street, Sutton, said: “I always go for draws because that’s how matches begin.

“I’ve had some significant wins on football over the years, much bigger than this one. But then again, I usually bet more than 3p. My ambition is to skin Betfred for a million!”

George, who is something of a keep-fit fanatic, always walks a mile from his home to the Betfred shop, where he is known for doing regular push-ups on chairs.

He left his home city of Budapest, Hungary at just 20 during the uprising of 1956 when Russian troops took to the streets.

George went on to play tournament chess for Mansfield Chess Club and was crowned Mr Nottingham in 1969 for body-building.
