Mansfield school’s breakfast club the best in East Midlands

Posted onPosted on 27th Jan

A Mansfield primary school has been crowned the best in the East Midlands at the annual Kellogg’s breakfast club awards.

Asquith Primary School was chosen by a panel of judges and received £1,000 to spend on improving the breakfast club.

Pupils and breakfast club leaders will also attend a ceremony at the Houses of Parliament in March to collect their award alongside MPs.

Judges selected winners based on the people and activities that transform the mornings of children across the UK. From inspirational volunteers to unique educational sessions, the competition was tough.

The Asquith breakfast club was described as a happy and jolly place to be with lots of things always happening.
Children work as a team to set up the chairs and tables then eat breakfast together.

Corinna Brown, breakfast club volunteer said: “We are delighted and incredibly proud to have won the Kellogg’s Breakfast Club Awards.

“For most of our children this is a vital start to their day. They can feel safe, respected and valued here. They then take this feeling with them throughout their day into the main school and the classroom.”

The school also has themed days such as a Roald Dahl breakfast, which the children love.

Asquith will spend its winnings on new cooking equipment, buying cushions to make a comfortable reading area and buying K’nex construction kits to scout out any budding engineers attending the breakfast club.

Chris Silcock, of Kellogg’s UK & Ireland, said: “I have had the opportunity to see the amazing work breakfast clubs do first hand. Now, more than ever, breakfast clubs offer a lifeline for so many families. They support working parents, feed hungry children and offer informal social and academic learning opportunities.

“The breakfast club awards is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the incredible and vital these clubs make across the UK. I look forward to congratulating the pupils and breakfast club leaders at the award ceremony.”

In 2019 Kellogg’s donated £650,000 to breakfast clubs. It is celebrating 21 years of supporting breakfast clubs — offering funding, food and training to 3,000 clubs across the UK.
