Focus on road safety

During National Eye Health Week Specsavers stores in Mansfield and Sutton teamed up with the Via East Midlands road safety team for a local campaign about sight testing.

As part of the week-long initiative, they worked with road safety officers to put on more than 10 events, targeting local drivers.

People were challenged to a sight test, where participants read a number plate from the driving standard distance of 20 metres and were offered free eye tests and eye health advice.

The Sutton team took stalls to Kirkby outdoor market and Ashfield District Council offices, while the Mansfield store visited the Via East Midlands head office in Bilsthorpe to talk to staff.

Sutton store director Nigel Davidson said: “It was been great to work together with the local road safety team to talk about how important eyesight is for safe driving.

“Drivers must be able to read a car number plate from 20 metres and wear glasses or contacts if they need to, as well as have an adequate field of vision.”

Patrick Hegarty, store director at Mansfield Specsavers, added: “An eye test isn’t just about checking your sight, we also examine your eye health.

“So many eye conditions that we identify are treatable these days but, if they are left untreated, they can lead to irreversible sight loss. It really is worth having a regular check-up.”

Events were also held at County Hall in Nottingham, Ashfield District Council’s northern transport depot, West Bridgford town centre, the B&Q distribution centre in Worksop, Trent Bridge house, Hucknall market and Team Knowhow head office in Newark.
