‘Do It Different’ with The Workhouse

Posted onPosted on 23rd Jan

The National Trust at The Workhouse, Southwell, is launching a new collaborative art exhibition on Saturday, 8th February.

‘Do It Different’ is the result of an alternative art school run by artist educator, Morgan Tipping.

Last year Morgan created a new kind of art school at The Workhouse, working with diverse creatives across Nottinghamshire, which included young residents from Southwell’s Caudwell House, Minster View and Nottingham MenCap.

At The Factory Art School, the collaborators have unique communication, movement and learning styles. Some are on the autistic spectrum, have learning difficulties or are differently mobility abled.

Together, they have collaboratively developed artwork that will be displayed in The Workhouse when the property opens for the new 2020 season from 8th February.

The project is part of a partnership between the National Trust’s Trust New Art and Arts Council England, connecting people to National Trust places through contemporary arts. It shows a diverse range of creative communication that aims to break the rules and routines of the past.

Artist educator, Morgan Tipping said: “The diverse and creative collaborations over the summer and autumn have uncovered imaginative, thought provoking and emotionally impactful terrain. I am excited about inviting visitors to explore ‘Do It Different’ further by evolving ‘The Factory Art School’ from an open studio into an exciting exhibition for spring 2020.”

Illustrator and teacher Mel Rye has also been working with Morgan and The Workhouse to launch the art installation. Together with the businesses of Southwell, The Workhouse has invited people to get involved in the ‘Do it Different’ Southwell Arts Trail.

Located within seven shops around the town are seven different coloured stamps to collect. Participants can follow the trail and see the artwork created by the ‘Do it Different’ artists before trading in stamps for a unique enamel badge at The Workhouse shop.
