Stags boss says its safety first

Mansfield Town travel to Morecambe on Saturday looking to avenge a home defeat at the One Call Stadium earlier in the season when one of many late goals conceded this season cost them points.

The Stags hit 50 points with last weekend’s victory over AFC Wimbledon, which is usually enough for clubs to avoid relegation to the Conference. They remain 10 points above the drop zone with six games remaining.

Mansfield could also still make the play-offs after losing just one of seven matches in March,

However, manager Paul Cox admitted this week: “My main aim is to keep this club in the League. In our first season that would be a great achievement. Let’s count the games down and see where we are.

“You never know, but I just want to finish in the top half.”

After two days off earlier in the week the players headed for an overnight stay at Morecambe. The Stags will be without the suspended James Jennings and Anthony Howell. Ross Dyer, Ben Hutchinson, Paul Black and youngster Jack Thomas, who had been tipped to make a debut in April, are injured.

It was revealed this week that the club’s annual accounts up to June 2013 showed the club owed around £4.5m, with around £3.5m of that owed to owner John Radford’s company One Call Insurance Ltd.

Most of the rest is owed to former directors Andy Saunders and Steve Hymas, who are taking legal action against the club to recover their investments.

A Mansfield Town spokesman said: “The latest figures effectively represent the price of promotion to the Football League, as well as the investment of other areas of the football club, which has allowed it to grow and develop in the past few years.

“The club expects to see an improvement in the next financial year, whilst still operating at a loss, as is the case with the majority of football clubs at our level.”
