Recycling scheme donation for hospice

Posted onPosted on 28th Apr

Ashfield District Council’s metal recycling scheme has raised £10,000 for the John Eastwood Hospice, Sutton, thanks to a metal recycling scheme Mansfield Crematorium joined through the Institute of Crematorium and Cemetery Management.

Metal recovered at the end of a cremation, including screws and handles from a coffin, is recycled by a specialist company.

Any surplus money generated from this process is shared between scheme members, who must donate anything they receive to bereavement-related charities.

Craig Bonar, director of resources and business transformation at the council, said: “We are pleased to have donated £10,000 to John Eastwood Hospice as part of the metal recycling scheme.

“The hospice provides a fantastic service within the district and we know there are many families that have benefited from their help and support. We hope this money goes some way to them continuing to support the local community.”

Sharon Williams, chief at the hospice, who is pictured with a staff member, said “It was great to hear that the hospice has been chosen as beneficiary of this fantastic donation, as we rely on fundraising and donations to enable us to support specialist palliative care services.

“The donation will go towards funding our ambition to fully refurbish the In-Care 12 bed unit, in what will be our 30th year of supporting local people in the hospice and out in the community.”
